GNC Senior Network Engineer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Job Summary

A network engineer installs, configures, administers, and manages production and non-production networks to ensure constant availability, adequate capacity, good response time/performance, recoverability, and security. The scope of technologies includes but is not limited to switches, routers, firewalls, IDS/IPS devices, secure URL filters, vulnerability scanners, VPNs, and wireless access points, and wireless controllers. A network engineer also needs the ability to be able to multi-task, plan, and manage assignments and solve problems. Recognized as a Subject Matter Expert in 3 or more technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supports Business Initiatives by:

  • Planning, upgrading and deploying networks and network equipment using established standards

  • Designing networks and device configurations to meet requirements and specifications

  • Working closely with various IT areas to design support transitions and streamline support tasks

  • Working on multiple projects, assisting with task level planning, multi-tasks and accurately reports the status of all assignments

  • Developing ideas for implementation to improve overall service availability

Supports Incident Management by:

  • Providing support, assistance, and manages service requests and incidents to ensure they are completed or escalated properly.

  • Serving as the escalation point for problems and incidents not resolved by the Network Engineers and Administrators.

  • Actively monitoring service availability and is proactive to avoid service disruptions and reduce failures. Develops relevant metrics (KPI/SLA/SLO) to identify improvement opportunities.

Supports Change Management by:

  • Submitting and completing change requests in a timely manner while minimizing impact to the business

Contributes Professionally by:

  • Actively developing and maintaining procedures, processes, and troubleshooting documents

  • Providing training to Network Engineers, Administrators, and Service Desk technicians

  • Keeping abreast of new technologies

  • Completing other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

10+ years of relevant experience in formal IT and Network Administration

Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Related field or relevant work experience

Strong Administration/Support of core Network hardware and software Technologies:

  • Switches, routers, firewalls, VPN concentrators, wireless access points and controllers

  • Firmware patches

  • Network monitoring tools (SolarWinds)

Strong Administration/Support of Various Core Services:

  • LAN/WAN access

  • Internet access - Secure URL filter (Websense)

  • Site to Site VPNs


  • Vulnerability scanner

  • System backup and recovery

Advanced Knowledge of networking concepts and troubleshooting

Previous experience working with external vendors/suppliers and contractors to complete necessary work

Demonstrated Cross-Functional ability to work with fellow IT Associates to identify Root Problems and design solutions to resolve

System security and design principles

Extensive Experience with:

  • BGP, OSPF, MPLS, IPSec, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

  • Planning and deployment of new platforms or significant upgrades to existing platforms

Advanced overall Troubleshooting skills

Outstanding Troubleshooting skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Attention to detail and able to understand business objectives

Knowledge and understanding of Budgeting/Forecasting
